The Buzzards Bay Regatta is one of the largest multi-class regattas in the US with approximately 450 boats and 1200 sailors across fifteen different classes. Boats and sailors come from all across the Northeast and the country as they look to enjoy the renowned sailing conditions, competition and race management. 2008 will mark the 36th anniversary of the regatta, and it is being hosted by the Beverly Yacht Club in Marion, MA. Racing takes place across 5 circles encompassing the north end of Buzzards Bay, with the large Laser fleet sailing out of historic Fort Taber in New Bedford. Après-sailing festivities take place on the grounds of the Beverly Yacht Club with tents, food, drinks and entertainment over the three day event.
Besides the very competitive one design, PHRF and IRC fleets, this year BBR is looking to include a classic boat fleet, a group that has been absent for a few years. Also this year we will host a new program developed to encourage cruising sailors, families and non racers to test the waters of the race course and experience the fun of a great regatta. In conjunction with Sail Magazine, BBR will host Expressly for Fun that will provide new racers a day of lectures and Q&A from well known sailors covering the basics of racing, boat speed and the rules. This will be followed by two days of fun racing where they will experience the excitement of racing in a venue tailored for those trying it for the first time.
With strong interest already from classes and sailors, generous support from our sponsors, a first class race management team and hundreds of passionate volunteers, the 2008 BBR is shaping up to be a regatta you won't want to miss. We look forward to welcoming you to Marion in August!
